Chester Bennington Joins Stone Temple Pilots As New Vocalist

Well, this is weird. I am more shocked hearing Linkin Park front-man Chester Bennington has been announced as the new vocalist for the Stone Temple Pilots than I was hearing Tim Lambesis tried hiring a hitman to kill his wife.

I never thought I’d read anything like this and while Chester is definitely no Scott Weiland (who was fired for the 1000th time in February), you have to admit he does sound pretty damn awesome.

Linkin Park fans need not worry, Chester isn’t abandoning Linkin Park and STP recognise that it’ll always be Bennington’s first band and priority. Listen to a new song entitled, “Out of Time” below with Chester on vocals.

Black Dahlia Murder Debut New Track, “Raped in Hatred by Vines of Thorn” Via Revolver Mag

The Black Dahlia murder have released a second track off of their highly anticipate upcoming album Everblack, titled “Raped in Hatred by Vines of Thorn”, which was written about front-man Trevor Strnad’s favourite horror movies, Evil Dead. You can listen to the track here, but you might want to pre-rip your underwear now because this song is going to tear you apart.

This album is number #1 on our list of anticipated albums of 2013, we cannot wait. The album comes out June 11, 2013 and it cannot come around fast enough.

Children of Bodom Debut Title Track, “Halo Of Blood” From Forthcoming Album

Children of Bodom have debuted the title track from their upcoming album entitled, Halo of Blood which is set for a North American release of June 11, 2012. You can listen to track over at Pitchfork of all places here.

The track seems to feature the standard Children of Bodom fare with slightly more black metal influence, but still very much a COB song complete with epic guitar solo and keyboard riffing.

Highly regarded metal band August Burns Red have released a lyric video for new track “Fault Line“, off of their forthcoming album Rescue & Restore, which will be out on June 25th via Solid State Records.

The track sort of has that old ABR feel to it and a great breakdown to match. It’ll be interesting to see what the album sounds like, still a good track but hoping the album has some better and less repetitive material on it as well.

Russian Circles Enter The Studio To Begin Recording Follow Up To Empros

Instrumental sludge, post-rockers Russian Circles have entered the studio to begin recording their next album which is a follow-up to Empros. The band is once again working with producer Brandon Curtis (Secret Machines) at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Tim Lambesis Pleads Not Guilty: Lawyer Claims Whole Thing A “Setup”

Another day, another chapter in the case of As I Lay Dying front man Tim Lambesis, which has become a whole lot stranger. The lawyer defending Tim, Anthony Salerno has come out accusing the police of orchestrating and setting the whole thing up and that Lambesis is in-fact the victim in all of this.

Somehow imagining someone else telling Lambesis: “Okay, when you’re asked by a hitman you’re seeing to kill your wife you make sure you tell them that you want her dead and to give him cash, gate codes and times your wife will be alone” — sounds a little far-fetched, unless of course he was hypnotised into saying that and in that case, the whole situation would get even weirder.

The lawyer had the following to say:

“I would anticipate myself asking for quite a bit of additional discovery, particularly on this person I strongly suspect is a snitch and is an informant for the police and was really creating this whole scenario and sort of setting Tim up. I believe there’s a good probability he may be a police informant. And that information is only available internally with the police department, or in this case the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, and through the D.A.’s office, and that’s something I’m gonna have to explore as well.”

And then brought up the fact that Lambesis’ wife has a brother in the police department involved:

“There’s one other element to this, too, which is… I don’t want to start to make accusations on this one unless I have some more information, but I will point out that Tim’s wife’s brother, I understand, is a San Diego Sheriff’s deputy, and I think I would be remiss if I didn’t fully explore that, ’cause that is a litte bit… it’s at the bare minimum very coincidental, and it may be more than that.”

Police have been using undercover cops to catch criminals since forever, I don’t see how such a defence could work in a case where Lambesis is facing a potential 9 year sentence for a charge of “solicitation of murder” — but by the looks of it, he has a great lawyer who is already planting seeds of doubt. If OJ got away with murder, there’s no reason Lambesis can’t get win, but that doesn’t make him any greater of a guy though.

Greeley Estates — Devil Son: EP Review

Part two of Greeley Estate’s ambitious two-EP release entitled Devil Son has finally landed and after much speculation as to what it would sound like we’ve finally got our answer.

Devil Son sees the band reintroducing elements from the No Rain, No Rainbow days (a.k.a clean singing), elements that were noticeably and intentionally absent on The Narrow Road. Although don’t be fooled, Devil Son is arguably as heavy in some parts as The Narrow Road was.

The opening track, “Devil Son” is a slow Southern style ballad with front-man Ryan immediately introducing the return of the clean vocals over subtle acoustic guitar and tribal drums being pounded into submission and creepy anthemic chant-like vocals that send chills down your spine.

First full-length track on the EP, “Marionette” that sounds like a track that wouldn’t have sounded out of place if it found its way onto their 2010 release, No Rain, No Rainbow. The track perfectly balances the heavy with a pop-like chorus that makes this one of the more enjoyable tracks on the album.

Drumming piece de resistance, “Turn The Night Away” is a deceiving track that slowly builds up before exploding towards the end with one of the heaviest breakdowns Greeley Estates have ever written. The off-key drum work in this track is impressive, it’s quite possibly some of the best drum-work we’ve heard from drummer Chris Julian since he joined the band back in 2009.

Production wise Devil Son is up there with The Narrow Road (if not, better) the clean vocals, drum-work and super-heavy moments on the record work really well and considering this is a self-produced release that sounds like it has had a million dollars spent on it, it makes the production aspect even more impressive. The intro track had some minor clipping when the pounding drums kicked in, but that could have just been my sound-card or crappy headphones.

If you yearn for the Far From The Lies days, second last track “Porcelain” is probably as close as you’re going to get to the older Greeley Estates sound. Primarily consisting of Ryan’s unique clean vocals with occasional screaming parts. The drumming in this track is once again impressive and makes what could have very much been a lull track interesting and relevant to the disc.

If you’re after the best track on the EP, disc closer, “Cut Me Out” is a creepy 5 minute track showcasing the one thing that Greeley have always been able to do: make you feel uncomfortable and slightly creeped out.

With ghost like whispering, sing/screaming over heavily down-tuned guitars slowly riffing away like a blade cutting through your skin Cut Me Out is a really creepy track. But it doesn’t stop there, at the 3 minute mark the track gets even creepier with haunted piano and whispering for a few seconds before Ryan starts screaming his heart out again.

While The Narrow Road was a great EP, Devil Son feels like the much better half of the two discs which may just be equated to its diversity. Greeley Estates have proven they can write a solid heavy track without clean vocals, but after listening to Devil Son I hope the next thing they put out sees a return of the singing/screaming formula because I think it works incredibly well without sounding generic.

Rating: 10 out of 10.

Balance and Composure Announce Completion of New Album
