GWAR front-man Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie has been found dead in his own home at the age of 50. His body was found on the evening of March 23, sometime between 3pm and 7pm by his band mates.
GWAR manager Jack Flanagan released the official statement on Brockie’s death:
It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 PM EST Sunday March 23, 2014. His body was found Sunday by his band mate at his home in Richmond, VA. Richmond authorities have confirmed his death and next of kin has been notified. A full autopsy will be performed. He was 50 years old, born August 30, 1963.
My main focus right now is to look after my band mates and his family. More information regarding his death shall be released as the details are confirmed.
This marks the second death for GWAR in the space of 3 years. The band lost guitarist Corey Smooth aka Flattus Maximus in November 2011 at the age of 34 years old due to a heart attack. Many of the band members assumed a drug overdose, but the autopsy proved otherwise.
Although no official cause of death has been determined, the band have been known for their heavy drug use in the past, whether or not this is a factor in Brockie’s death will remain to be seen after the autopsy is performed.
Thoughts are with the band and family & friends.
